Visit to Katholiko

Discover the monastery where Saint John the hermit lived

Katholiko is one of the most beautiful and maybe the oldest Monastery in Crete, located in Akrotiri peninsula 18km from Chania.
We depart at around 9:00am for the Monastery. After about 30minutes we pass one of the greatest Monasteries of Crete (Agia Triada, Holly Trinity in English) and 10 minutes later we reach a point where we leave our car for a beautiful walk. First we walk by another Monastery (Gouverneto) almost as beautiful and old as Katholikon (no stopping). As we continue we will walk 200 steps down to katholikon where Saint John the hermit lived and died, about 800 hundred years ago. After stopping for while, we walk through a small but beautiful gorge all the way down to the Cretan Sea and back to our car.
On our way back, fist we make a 15 minute stop in "Agia Triada". From there we move to the ancient city of Aptera located near Souda bay. The city goes back to the Minoan civilization. The Romans took over the area around 65BC and did some magnificent work in building public baths, cisterns, a Theater. From there we move to the high mountains for maybe the best food you ever had. After lunch we depart for Chania. Our drive takes us through some wild places and also through one of the most beautiful gorges (Therisos) of Crete.
