Ecotour in the Amvrakikos Gulf and the Tzoumerka Mountains
Discover the unique and rich flore and fauna of Greece!
The Amvrakikos Gulf is the largest wetland system in Greece, and consists of lagoons, reed-beds, forests and salt-marshes. The Rodia wetland is situated in its North-Western part, and is the biggest single expanse of reeds in Greece. Here more than 250 different bird species come to spend the winter, and reproduce. The wetlands are known for their large colony of herons and wild pelicans. The Wetland is very rich in fish and is the best place for eel-fishing in Greece.
The Tzoumerka mountain range is located in Central Pindos, between the rivers Arachthos and Aspropotamos. The Tzoumerka Mountains form the natural frontier between Epirus and Thessaly.
Many peaks of Tzoumerka have an altitude of more than 2000 m. Verdant forests, abundant running waters, rivers, waterfalls, steep slopes create a scenery charming and at the same time wild and imposing. The region boasts some of the most scenic landscapes in the country, an ideal region for nature lovers and hikers.
Many areas of Tzoumerka are part of Natura 2000, a network of protected areas, as many species of fauna and flora, some of them endangered are native of various areas in Tzoumerka. Moreover, many other species of wild animals find refuge in the forests of the region.

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Amvrakikos Gulf
Drive to Koronisia a small and picturesque island in the heart of Amvrakikos Gulf, connected to the land by road. Stay in a guest house.
Day 2: Rodia Wetlands
Drive to Strogili village, where the Rodia Wetland Center is located and enjoy a guided tour: you will be informed about the Amvrakikos Gulf, the wetlands, the species of birds and other wild-life that live in them, the monuments and history of the area, its churches and monasteries, and also about the traditional methods of eel-fishing.
After the tour drive to Tzoumerka for the night

Day 3. Tzoumerka Mountains
Today enjoy a drive through the Tzoumerka Mountains, on an alpine road. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking: green valleys, forests, and rocky peaks. The only evidence of human activity is some Sheppard huts.
Return in the evening at hotel.
Day 4. Chrousias Gorge
Drive to Kalarrites Village, a traditional village located at 1.100 m altitude in South Pindos. From Kalarrites, hike to the picturesque village of Sirrako Village, crossing the gorge of Chrousias River, which flows between the two villages. The area is rich is wild flowers and plants as well as birds. Return to Kalarrites village after approx. 3 hour trekking. O/N in a traditional style guest house in Kalarrites the village
Day 5. Arachthos Gorge
Drive to the Gorge of Arachthos River, at the stone-built bridge of Politsa, and enjoy a days’ walk while observing the surrounding flora and fauna. Here you will, also, have the opportunity to do rafting at one of the most beautiful rivers in Greece!! Transfer to Ioannina airport or bus station
